MapInfo Strategic Partner of the Year Award

For the second year in a row, Tonkin Consulting has been awarded the MapInfo Australia/New Zealand Partner of the Year. The US-based MapInfo Corporation is the leading provider of Location Intelligence solutions. The Practice was first awarded MapInfo’s Australia/NZ Partner of the Year in 2005, just two years after signing up as a Strategic Partner.

Since July 2003, Tonkin has also qualified as the South Australian authorised MapInfo Training Centre and has been responsible for generating strong sales of MapInfo solutions through its consulting projects.

Jonathan Wright, Managing Director, MapInfo Asia Pacific, said: “We have many strong distributor partnerships across the Asia Pacific region that provide local sales and services support for MapInfo solutions. Tonkin Consulting is one partner that has demonstrated an enormous amount of support for MapInfo over its three-year relationship and we congratulate Tonkin Consulting on a rewarding partnership that we look forward to continuing.”

Our close relationship with MapInfo was critical in winning the award and driving sales in the local government sector, to the point where MapInfo has become the solution of choice for these clients.

Tonkin Consulting Managing Director, Ken Schalk, welcomed the award. “We rely on MapInfo solutions within our own Practice and naturally recommend these solutions to our clients,” he said. “The recognition from MapInfo as its leading Strategic Partner in Australia and New Zealand is an enormous accolade and one that we truly value. We look forward to continuing our close relationship and mutual success in the years to come.”

Spatial Infrastructure Award

The Tonkin Spatial team recently received the 2006 Spatial Excellence Award, taking out the Infrastructure category. Each year, the awards recognise and acknowledge excellence in the growing spatial information industry in South Australia.

The team won the award for its application of SIS to water management projects. Our entry outlined two significant infrastructure projects undertaken by Tonkin Consulting in this field as an illustration of the way in which Spatial Information System software is widely utilised within the Practice. The first case study outlined the application of MapInfo Professional in conjunction with the hydraulic modelling package TUFLOW, to examine the impact of urban consolidation and redevelopment on runoff, and the need for councils to upgrade stormwater drainage networks. The second case study described how MapInfo Professional had been extensively utilised within the $600M Wimmera Mallee Pipeline Project.  Both case studies demonstrated the innovative and widespread application of SIS within Tonkin Consulting in an engineering environment.

Tonkin Consulting is well known in SA for its water, environment and civil infrastructure projects. The Tonkin Spatial team has been developing expertise in spatial solutions for over 15 years, applying innovative solutions in support of these projects with great success. We are sure that receiving the 2006 Spatial Excellence Award will spur Tonkin Spatial on to greater achievements.

SA Local Govt MapInfo User Group

In May this year, a number of technical staff members from SA local government councils and members of the Tonkin Spatial team held a very successful half-day SALGMUG meeting at The
City of Tea Tree Gully.

Again in August more than 20 people attended the meeting at the City of Marion, with an even representation from metro and regional councils.

The Regional Council of Goyder has kindly offered to host the next SALGMUG meeting at their Burra office in November. Leonie Fretwell from Goyder Regional Council and Malcolm Guy from
the Tonkin Spatial team will showcase Goyder’s new hosted Exponare solution.

These meetings enable council staff to come together and discuss ways of optimising specific spatial information products and solutions. The councils often share common challenges and the user group meetings help staff to keep their communities abreast of council information and services.

If you or your council wish to be included in these user groups, please contact Jody Atkins on
(08) 8273 3100 or by clicking on the following link:  jody.atkins@tonkin.com.au
