2009 AWARD-WINNING TEAM
Last month Tonkin Consulting won the “People and Community” industry award at the 2009 SA Spatial Excellence Awards for a recent project we undertook for Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism.
This was the first time we entered an award outside of the Infrastructure Category, and highlights the diversity of projects we undertake and depth of skills within the Spatial Services team.
As part of the implementation of the Fleurieu Peninsula Region Integrated Strategic Tourism Plan 2007-2012, we were awarded the project to create a series of maps to visualise places of relevance to the tourism industry.
Data in a variety of formats was collated from the four participating local councils and other sources to create a regional perspective of the area. Large maps were printed for a Visioning Workshop, providing participants with an overview of the locations and relationships between tourism points. They also showed how zoning regulations could impact on tourism investment. The maps became a vehicle to encourage the group to actively participate in discussions and generate ideas. By encouraging participants to draw on the maps, these ideas were captured and documented and included in the mapping database. The use of layered PDFs was one of the more innovative uses of technology for the project as well.
The project demonstrated the power of using mapping visualisation to bring together different and sometimes conflicting ideas of various stakeholders, and provide a basis for strategic forward planning.
Congratulations to the team for their efforts.
